CHILDRESS – Childress High School (CHS) senior Ethan Ferguson signed his letter of intent to play football for Hardin-Simmons University at his signing ceremony on Friday, Feb. 23 at the CHS gym.
“I’ve dreamed about it for so long, and today is finally the day it’s all coming together,” Ferguson said. “It means everything.”
Hardin-Simmons University has an amazing program, Ferguson said when I asked him why he chose them. “I love their program,” he added. “They like to win, and they like to win by a lot. That sounds pretty good to me.”
Ferguson said he and Da’reon Mathis, who will also play football at Hardin-Simmons University, have a lot of winning left to do. “We do what we do, and we do it well together,” he said. “We’re just going to keep doing that.”
The soon to be Cowboy is also looking forward to having a familiar face on the Hardin-Simmons University football field. “It’s a lot more comforting than just going in there by myself,” Ferguson said.
Mathis is ready. “I’m excited,” he said. “He (Ethan) is a big-time guy, especially being on the same team as him again. It’s going to be fun.”
Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Bo Helm opened the signing ceremony saying he’s excited for Ferguson and his future.
“It’s a celebration of the community and of the team,” Helm said. “Y’all helped get him to this point. I know he appreciates that, as we’ve talked about it together in the past.”
It was a proud moment for Ferguson’s mom Sarah Prater, who has seen him spend a lot of time on football. From the gym to praying, she said he has dedicated himself to focusing on football.
“I’m so excited my son gets to further his career in football,” she said. “This is what he’s always wanted.”
“It means the world,” said his father Michael Ferguson, who plans on taking multiple trips to Abilene to watch Ethan play. “He’s worked very hard, and he’s a wonderful kid. He loves to win, but he always puts his team first just like he does his whole family.”
The signing ceremony was also a sweet moment for Ferguson’s big sister Kendalyn. “I’m so proud of Ethan, and I’m so excited to see all the good he’s going to do.”
She said he’s worked hard, he’s sweet and he’s good to people. “He deserves all the good that there is to offer,” Kendalyn said.
As soon as community members came into the gym, Ferguson would walk over to them and hug them. “They’ve been with me by my side the whole time,” he said. “I’m glad they can come see the outcome of all of it.”
When I asked Ethan if he had any advice for future Bobcats, he said: “Anything’s possible, and you can do it all with God.”
As I was about to leave, I saw Helm smiling. He said: “Childress is a good place to be.”
