CHILDRESS – The heart-shaped pond that is going viral on social media this Valentine’s Day was excavated by Childress resident David Richards.
“We designed the shape of the heart, which was exciting for us,” Richards said. “All of my guys helped, and it came out very nice. It has been seen by a lot of people.”
Even more now, thanks to Facebook. It was posted to the Facebook group ‘Google Earth, Structures and Anomalies’ on Jan. 24.
Since then, more than 3,000 people have seen the heart-shaped pond that is located near Lubbock. It also lights up at night, according to Tyanna Kenuhmer, who posted the photo on Facebook.
“I’m humbled that people like our work,” Richards said. “We’ve done a lot of unusual things for people.”
In fact, Richards and his team specialize in doing exactly what their customers want. His team consists of Curtis Simpson, Esteban Perez and Gaynor Gonzales.
He said the project started several years ago when one of the homeowners saw a picture of the heart-shaped pond on Pinterest.
“She asked me if I could mimic that,” Richards said. “I said, ‘Sure, I’d be glad to do it’. We all put our heads together and built the pond according to their wishes.”
Richards said the pond is huge. It’s roughly two acres. The symmetrical pond even has docks that look like an arrow. The owners call it Cupid’s Pond.
“The arrow is for recreation,” he said. “That’s where they entertain guests. It was fun doing it, because it was a challenge. We enjoy doing this type of dirt work.”
