CHILDRESS – Golf Digest’s story “The future of Texas golf is changing with these 12 intriguing new courses” includes the Childress Hall golf course.
Reporter Derek Duncan wrote: “This new destination club in Childress, some four hours northwest of Dallas, is slated to have two 18-hole courses, one from Tom Doak and the other, to come next year, from Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner. Set on an old cattle ranch in a region of prairie, bush and eolian sand dunes in the panhandle near the Oklahoma border and the headwaters of the Red River, the model is a getaway club with cabins designed for multi-day stays a la Sand Hills or Ohoopee Match Club. Doak expects to begin construction on the Upper Course sometime in late fall or winter (Hanse and Wager will break ground on the Lower approximately a year later), and when complete, Childress Hall may come to redefine perceptions of golf in the state.”
Childress Mayor Cary Preston said he thinks being in the magazine is definitely a plus, but having the actual golf course here is what’s going to be the really big thing that’s going to happen to our area.
“I’m just really excited to have them in our community and looking forward to it,” Preston said. “I think it’s going to be an opportunity for new businesses I believe sometime in the near future, and hopefully, we’ll see some growth.”
Preston is already thinking about who will play on the golf courses. “We’re going to have some really influential people playing there and professional athletes I would imagine,” he said. “It’s going to be an exciting time for our little community.”
