We Can Care celebrates survivors
CHILDRESS – The 12th Annual We Can Care Survivor Dinner sponsored by South Plains Electric Cooperative was a night to remember.
“This night was very special,” said We Can Care President Carolyn Jennings. “We ate and had entertainment. Everyone had a good time.”
More than 100 people attended the dinner, Jennings said. In addition to cancer survivors, their caretakers or guests came as well. We Can Care members and South Plains Electric employees also attended.
The night started with a prayer by Randy Wilson. We Can Care member Tammy Wyatt said Sarah Cook from Birdie Fannie catered a wonderful meal, and South Plains Electric employees served the food to attendees.
“They (South Plains Electric employees) were very helpful,” Jennings added. “They just jumped right in, and so did the We Can Care ladies.”
Jennings was honored for being president of We Can Care for the last four years. Member Barbara Sue Parr presented Jennings with a gift certificate from the organization, Wyatt said.
“Barbara Sue talked about how Carolyn is a wonderful example to all of us,” Wyatt explained. “Jim and Carolyn are a team, and they both have given 100 percent to We Can Care. They have made countless trips out of town taking survivors to treatments.”
Jennings also recognized South Plains Electric during the event. “They gave us $2,000 plus paying for the meal,” she said.
The gratitude for South Plains Electric sponsoring the Survivor Dinner for the 12th time was felt throughout the event. “We are so blessed to have South Plains Electric support this event,” Wyatt said. “It was a wonderful evening.”
During the event, the Childress Community Chorus also performed. “”It was cute,” Jennings said. “It was very nice.”
Wyatt agreed. “We had great entertainment by the Childress Community Chorus,” she said.
While the event is over, the We Can Care organization doesn’t stop helping cancer patients. “We keep these people in our prayers,” Jennings said. “We want to encourage everyone with cancer to sign up and let us help them with their travel expenses.”
