Deer season kicks off this weekend

CHILDRESS – With hunters and land owners gearing up for deer hunting season, Childress County Game Warden Zack Fisher has safety tips and new license information.

“With a new deer season around the corner, I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of the important rules, safety and upcoming season dates,” he said.

Hunting licenses

Since hunting licenses expire on Aug. 31 of every year, Fisher wants to remind hunters to make sure their licenses are valid before going into the stand or field. This hunting year is the first one for digital license and electronic tagging.

“Be sure to pay attention when purchasing either a physical or electronic license as tagging downed animals will be different,” he explained. “Licenses can be purchased online or at several locations in Childress.”

Fisher said anyone born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, is required to have completed Hunter Education and show proof of it. “There are a few exemptions, so be sure to check out the Texas Outdoor Annual App, which can be downloaded on your phone,” Fisher said.

Safety tips

“Always remember safety first,” he said. “Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction. Always know your target and what is beyond it.”

While hunter orange is not required on private property, Fisher highly recommends it. If hunting alone, Fisher said hunters need to tell someone where they will be and a time to expect them home.

“Finally, if you see something suspicious or witness poaching, report it,” he said.

Childress Community

Fisher said deer season is not just a time for hunters, landowners and game wardens like himself. It’s also a time for the Childress community to welcome hunters from all around.

“The influx of hunters not only means a busy season for game wardens but also for local businesses,” Fisher explained. “From buying ammunition at local stores, finding a place to sleep or going out for a bite to eat, it’s a busy time for everyone in the Childress community!”
